Magoffin County is located in eastern Kentucky in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field Region. It covers approximately 309 square mile of land area. Magoffin County was formed in 1860 from parts of Johnson, Morgan and Floyd counties. Natural gas, oil, and coal are all produced in Magoffin County. The county has an estimated population of 11,637.

Salyersville, the county seat, is located along the Licking River. Salyersville is located 96 miles southeast of Lexington, Kentucky; 179 miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio and 223 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee.
